Backup

Your files, saved.
Not your OS.

Omarchy.Fans Backup keeps an encrypted, differential copy of your home folder, your package lists and the system config you changed under /etc. It never touches the OS itself: a fresh Omarchy install brings that back, and your saved package lists put your software back on top.

Encrypted on your laptop with a password we never receive. We store data we cannot read.

What's in it

What gets backed up

Home folder

Everything under ~ except caches and Trash: your projects, dotfiles and work in progress.

Package lists

Every package you installed, official and AUR, with versions, plus your Omarchy version.

System config

The system settings you changed under /etc, on the daily system schedule.

Not the OS

The operating system itself is never backed up. Reinstall Omarchy from a fresh ISO, and your saved package lists put your software back on top of it.

How it works

Encrypted before it leaves your laptop.

Backup encrypts on your machine with a password Omarchy.Fans never receives, then only the ciphertext travels. We store data we cannot read, and we cannot reset that password for you: only your recovery kit can.

  • Differential, so it's fast

Only what changed since the last run gets sent. The first backup takes a while; every one after is quick.

  • Deduplicated and checked

Identical data is only ever stored once, and once a week a slice of it is read back and verified.

  • Two schedules

Your home folder and package lists back up hourly. Turn on the system scope and /etc joins a daily run.

  • A key per machine

Setup mints a key that can reach only this Backup. Lose the laptop, revoke the key at omarchy.fans, and the rest of your account is untouched.

Restores

Any snapshot, and it's free.

Restoring never touches your bill, however much you pull back. Grab one file, roll a folder back in place, or browse every snapshot like a folder of folders.

  • A file or folder

Restore it beside the current one, or in place over the top of it.

  • Browse it like Files

Every snapshot shows up as folders you can open, with nothing restored first.

  • A new machine

Install Omarchy from the ISO, open your existing Backup with the recovery kit's password, restore your home folder, then reinstall the saved package lists.

Keep this somewhere safe

The recovery kit is the only way back in.

Setup prints a recovery kit: the password that unlocks your Backup, and how to use it. Save it in a password manager or on paper. The keyring dies with the laptop, and Omarchy.Fans cannot reset that password — without the kit, a lost backup stays lost, for you and for us.

Not the same as the twin

Backup and Digital Twin do different jobs.

Digital Twin

A live copy of your working session: your home directory and running work, mirrored to a cloud machine you can open in a browser. It is not a backup, it's the same session, just able to keep going with the lid shut. See the Digital Twin.

Backup

An encrypted history of your files: every snapshot restic ever took, kept until you delete it, restorable to any machine at any time. It doesn't run anything, it just remembers.

Quick start

Set up in one sitting.

  1. Install

    Needs restic, then the plugin.

    sudo pacman -S restic
    omarchy plugin add https://github.com/OmarchyFans/omarchy-fans-backup
    omarchy plugin enable fans.omarchy.backup
    ~/.config/omarchy/plugins/fans.omarchy.backup/install.sh
  2. Set up

Pick Omarchy.Fans Backup, sign in with a device code, and choose what to back up. Storage is part of your Omarchy.Fans plan; nothing else to configure.

    omarchy-backup setup
    sudo omarchy-backup install-system # optional: adds /etc to a daily backup
  3. Save the recovery kit

Do this before anything else. It's the only way to open the backup on another machine.

    omarchy-backup recovery-kit
  4. Check on it

    omarchy-backup status
    omarchy-backup snapshots
    omarchy-backup restore ~/Work/project/notes.md
    omarchy-backup restore-guide # moving onto a new machine
Questions
What happens if I delete a backup?

It disappears from your account right away and stops accepting new data. The stored snapshots are cleared out after that; see the terms for the specifics.

What if I stop paying?

If your plan no longer covers what you're storing, new snapshots stop landing until you're back under quota or you upgrade. What happens to backups you already have is covered in the terms.

Can Omarchy.Fans read my backups?

No. Encryption happens on your laptop with a password we never receive. We store ciphertext, and we cannot reset that password for you — only your recovery kit can.

Can I restore onto a different machine?

Yes. Install Omarchy, install the plugin, open your existing Backup with the recovery kit's password, and restore. That's how a wiped or brand-new machine comes back.

Does this replace the Digital Twin?

No, they do different jobs. The Digital Twin is a live session you can open in a browser; Backup is an encrypted history of your files. Most people want both.
